Teacher Training

Join the original, biggest and most respected Baby Calming organisation in the UK.
Do you love babies? Would you like to support new mothers to experience a calmer, happier babymoon? Becoming a BabyCalm® teacher is an incredibly rewarding career move and this year is a particularly exciting year to join the BabyCalm® team. 2012 sees BabyCalm's launch into Australia, Dubai, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Spain with a USA launch planned for 2013. Spring 2012 sees Sarah and Charlotte launch ToddlerCalm®, classes for calmer toddlers and happier parents, nationwide and October 2012 sees the international release of Sarah's book "BabyCalm: A Guide for Calmer Babies and Happier Parents."
The BabyCalm® teacher training course studies research in Experimental and Developmental Psychology and the work of some of the world's leading baby experts, past and present. We also examine the neuro-physiology of the newborn brain and the science of baby sleep, the science of colic, SIDs (cot death), co-sleeping, babywearing and the dangers of many sleep training methods such as controlled crying. Our aim is to understand a baby's needs from a scientific, biological and psychological perspective as well as understanding and balancing these with the needs of the new parent, particularly the mother. We also appreciate that in order to fully calm babies and raise well adjusted happy children you must also work with the parent, particularly the mother, and so we also research the science of love and bonding in great detail. Our course incorporates a blend of theory and practical learning.
All BabyCalm® teacher training courses are taught by a small team of highly experienced mothers, the majority who hold degree level and above qualifications in Developmental Psychology.
You do not need any special qualifications to be eligible for our baby calmer teacher training, all we ask is that you have a genuine love of babies, that you have children of your own and a strong motivation to make a difference to new families via gentle parenting methods. We do also screen all potential teachers before we offer them a place on our training course to ensure that we maintain the ethics and integrity of our programme.
The BabyCalm® teacher training totals approximately 100 hours of home study and reflection and culminates in a face to face training weekend and a final course examination.
Lastly, we also insist that all of our teachers hold relevant professional insurance, adhere to our code of ethics and complete a set amount of continuing professional development hours each year.
Comments from our past trainees:
"Inspiring, well organised and presented. I left the training weekend full of research based knowledge and confidence in presenting it to parents - thank you." Sue Searle, Hertfordshire
"The training weekend was fantastic. Not only did I meet some other like minded and wonderful women, but what I took away with me was awe-inspiring. I can't wait to get started on this amazing journey of 'BabyCalm'. It's just what families REALLY need." Emma Inglefield, Warwickshire

Do you offer support after the training?
Once you have qualified you will be invited to join our private online teachers' discussion forum, we also encourage you to contact us with any questions you have once in practice. We offer an assortment of CPD training days throughout the year and hold an annual convention and social meet ups, details of our 2012 convention can be found here - BabyCalm® teachers also receive an attractive discount and priority booking of our conference tickets.
Will I be qualified to teach all courses and workshops?
The BabyCalm® teacher training course will qualify you to teach our core structure, that is the 4 wk course, the colic and crying workshop and the antenatal baby calming workshop. If you wish to lead BabyCalm® babywearing or baby led weaning workshops these options can be added at a later date, training for each consists of an 8 hour training workshop and 12 hours home study. In addition once qualified as a BabyCalm® teacher you will be eligible to train to teach ToddlerCalm® courses if you so wish. ToddlerCalm® training encompasses an additional 80hrs pre-course study, an 18hr study weekend and post course assessment. Naturally these courses all count towards your annual CPD credits and are charged at a significantly reduced fee in comparison to the initial training. Teachers must first qualify in our basic core structure before becoming eligible to take the BabyCalm® babywearing and baby led weaning and ToddlerCalm® add on training.
Do you offer marketing support?
We undertake a large amount of PR and marketing on a national level and employ the services of a very well respected PR company. We are already multi award winners and have many exciting projects in the pipeline (including the international release of our book in Autumn 2012 and international expansion in 2013) as well as articles already featured in many major printed media including The Express Newspaper, OK! magazine, Gurgle (Mothercare) magazine, Practical Parenting magazine, The Green Parent magazine, Pregnancy and Birth Magazine, Mother and Baby Magazine. We also exhibit at the main Baby Shows in Birmingham, London and Manchester (please note we unfortunately will not be attending the Birmingham show in 2012 as the date clashes with our conference). Our next stand is at the London Excel Baby Show in February 2012. We do however also expect our teachers to work hard to maintain a presence locally and although we do not finance stalls at local baby shows we do help our teachers with the sale of BabyCalm® pop up display banners for very reasonable prices. We are always on the end of a telephone or email to offer you as much support and encouragement as possible.
Do you set fees?
We set fees for our 3 group classes click here. You are able to set your own fee for private classes and charge for travel expenses for classes held at locations of parent's choice.
Do you keep a proportion of our earnings?
No. All of the money you earn is yours to keep.
Is your course the same as other baby calming training?
In a word - NO! our unique, ground-breaking course is often copied - don't be fooled by cheap, poor quality imitations.
Also, recently several people have asked us if our course is the same as Harvey Karp and the Happiest Baby techniques (recently brought to the UK by Babycalmers/ Newborn Calmers Network) - our answer is always "We could not be more different!".
The BabyCalm® Difference: BabyCalm® is an entirely unique concept, born in the UK, out of years of research and learning from new parents and babies with the aim of supporting new families via gentle (AP) parenting methods from newborn to toddlerdom and beyond. We are an organisation run by mothers - for mothers, we are not aware of any other organisation in the world offering what we do. What do we do? we support, we listen, we build confidence, we provide information and suggestions, in a way we aim to replace the great feminine wisdom that is so sorely missed from our society - we absolutely do not position ourselves as experts or suggest prescriptive ways for calming all newborn babies. We are non-judgemental and non-biased. We present scientific fact which allows the parent to make their own choices.
Our training focuses on supporting the mother (mostly) to become confident in her role, to trust her instincts and be her own expert - or as we call it "The Maternal Revolution!"
We spend a lot of time listening to mothers on our courses and supporting them to find solutions to their problems themselves. We do not advocate "one size fits all" advice or quick fix steps to calm newborn babies, instead we recognise each baby and each parent as the unique being they are. We cover many ways of calming babies based on modern research and ancient wisdom and lots of scientific evidence and always cover these in an unbiased way discussing the pros and cons of each technique so that the parent may make their own informed choice. We also recognise that calming the parent is as important as calming the baby! BabyCalm® is more of an ethos than a set of rules, we see our classes as a method of fascilitating personal growth and confidence in new parents. BabyCalm® challenge current parenting advice and adopt a new way of thinking, helping parents to have calmer children and be happier in their new role long after the first 12 weeks of the newborn period are over, our calming theories can be carried into toddlerdom and beyond, indeed we are launching ToddlerCalm® classes in Spring 2012.
Our core training course totals over 100 hours, including 18 hours face to face tuition - which we believe is an absolutely vital element of training. We screen all potential teachers, who must be mothers themselves, before accepting them onto our training in order to maintain the integrity of our concept. All of our teachers follow strict ethics codes which comply with WHO, UNICEF, FSIDs and BabyFriendly guidelines and must hold professional indemnity insurance before becoming certified. We strongly value CPD and each teacher must complete recognised CPD hours each year to remain certified.
We also run 3 different formats, short workshops, weekly classes and one to one support with the option of adding further training in specialised areas such as babywearing, baby led weaning, relaxation skills and Toddler Calming to enable our teachers to run several different courses aimed at different stages in a baby's development from newborn up until the age of three years (with the launch of ToddleCalm® in Spring 2012). Lastly, our teachers are self employed and we do not take a cut of their earnings. All teachers have the opportunity to earn generous commission on all of the products stocked in our online shop which provides further opportunity for a very attractive revenue stream and a very rewarding viable business. It is for all these reasons that BabyCalm® are the hot new and fresh name in baby calming set to take the parenting world by storm!

Do you limit the amount of teachers in one area?
No. The reason being is that BabyCalm® is not a franchise. Which means there are no excessive exclusivity fees to pay and no commitment to practice for a set period of time after the initial training. We actively encourage our teachers to work together to promote the BabyCalm® brand, however we do also realise it is not in anyone's interest to oversaturate an area with teachers and so regularly keep a close eye on supply and demand ratios in the UK.
